So many times I’ve heard that saying YES to various opportunities, people, experiences can change your life, and in my own experience I’ve found that to be very very true. However, saying no is just as powerful.
I’m writing this to you on January 10th, 2020 (HBD STEPHIE), which means fresh start to the year, New Year’s resolutions in full swing, big dreams and goals on the horizon. Is this you? I hope so, that’s exciting! A frequented question though is HOW to make progress towards those goals and in my opinion, sometimes saying ‘no’ is the best way.
- You’re trying to lose 10 pounds for spring break–say no to the free food at the work party, to the pizza night with the guys, or say no to someone convincing you to skip your workout.
- You’re trying to grow your business–say no to the 3:00 P.M. happy hour, to binge watching Netflix vs doing market research or say no to staying out late when you know you need to get up early.
- You’re trying to save money for your dream vacation–say no to the unnecessary pair of shoes, the $150 bar tab, or the Amazon Prime deal of the day.
Etc. etc. None of the things I listed are bad but within each choice is a cost–receive one thing, miss out on another otherwise known as opportunity cost. Sometimes saying yes is the move, but other times saying no in order to get us closer to what we really want is necessary.
“Is what you’re doing in this moment moving you closer or farther away from your goals?” I love that quote and a great way to keep ourselves in check when we need it most. Saying no, having delayed gratification, and sometimes missing out helps us make the progress we had yet to achieve. Here’s to a new year filled with crushing goals and believing in the possibilities that surround us on a daily basis.
Let’s make this the best year yet, deal?
