Since I was a little girl, I have watched the Derby every year with my mom. We’d start the day by heading to Thistledown race track to place her bet and then watch it on the couch at home. Once I turned 21, going to The Derby had been on my radar, so finally getting to check that off the bucket list was very exciting.

Gabe and I left Friday afternoon to spend the night in Lexington to visit his brother, which was about a 5-6 hour road trip. Dinner was at Local Taco and then drinks at Two Keys and Tin Roof. Wake up time was early Saturday morning to get ready and get breakfast at The Cure. We left around 9:45 A.M. for Louisville and thankfully hit no traffic! There are various areas to park near the track so overpaying for parking isn’t necessary. Some lots, like the church parking lot we found, offered a shuttle to Churchill Downs in return for a small donation.

Around 1:30 we headed into the stadium after grabbing some quick drinks at surrounding bars. A Mint Julep was first on my list and I’m happy to tell you that it was delicious! We were at Churchill Downs for about 6 hours. In that time we placed bets, drank, ate, and people watched! Both men and women had amazing outfits, from the dresses to the hats and to the suits. The Kentucky Derby is a perfect event to step out of your comfort zone and have some fun.

Need To Knows:

Tickets: Our tickets were located on the 3rd floor walk around area. We didn’t have seats but we did have a covered area where you can easily see the track and stay dry if it were to rain. Some people have boxes where you have a personal sitting area for you and your friends. Thankfully Gabe knew some family friends that were there so we crashed with them for a bit so I could give my feet a breather! There did appear to be a few different options to choose from depending on preference, budget, and experience, so I’m certain there is a ticket for you.

Wear comfortable shoes: I was told and didn’t listen and I did regret it! If you don’t have a seat you’re on your feet allday. I personally would’ve felt underdressed if I was wearing flats, so I would wear wedges or your most comfortable pair of heels.

Dress appropriately: Watch the weather! Thankfully we were covered from the rain, but the people in the pit were in a mud bath! If it’s calling for rain, don’t wear anything you don’t want ruined!

Purses: They say the bag requirement is 12×12 and anything larger is prohibited. Personally, I felt like I saw people with bigger, but those are the ‘rules’ they go by!

Overall, the Derby is a must and something I’d highly recommend to anyone. It’s a cool feeling to experience the long standing tradition, and it is the most exciting two minutes in sports! Already can’t wait for next year!

Till next time,
