“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
–Wayne Dyer
You’ve heard that one before right and is it not the truth? Situations can down right suck, let’s not get it twisted, and sometimes we need to sit with our feelings and own them for what they are. This is healthy and totally normal, but once we’ve had our moment, let’s not live down in the dumps forever. Taking a less than ideal situation and tweaking the way we look at it can do wonders for our mood and outlook. Here are a few steps that I take to help change my thinking.
- Look at the situation for what it is not what we think it is. Are you making the situation worse in your mind than it really is?? Be honest here!
- What good can from this? Literally, anything. One door closes, another one opens!
- What can I learn from this situation? Friends, when we learn we grow #AMIRITE
Example: I have to be at a meeting in 10 minutes but this traffic is slowing me down **feels angry, frustrated, anxious**.
Reframes the situation—**I am simply siting in traffic while being safe in my car. I feel like I’m going to be late, but I’m not actually late.** I need to get to this meeting, but I guess this gives me more time to practice, collect my thoughts, take a minute to relax, drink my coffee ect. Now I know to leave a few minutes earlier when I commute on this highway or at this time. IS THE WORLD ENDING NO MATTER HOW BAD IT FEELS? NOPE!
The way we speak about situations, people, experiences, or even the weather for darn sakes can alter our entire mood. Life can be hard, let’s not make it more difficult by viewing everything as the dark abyss that’s out to get us! Expressing gratitude can also help shift our perspective in an instant. What are you grateful for? Say three things out loud right meow, go ahead I’ll wait…..Doing this throughout the day can help keep your mind on the right path. “I don’t want to walk in the rain” to “I’m grateful I have two working legs that can help me get through this rain quickly.”
Perspective is literally everything, that’s how I feel at least, so I’ve spent a lot of time mastering how to shift this bad boy to work in my favor. Life is wonderful despite its hardships and heartaches, not because they don’t exist but because we can learn and grow from them.
Until time mi amigos
